Sadly, I'd like to share that former Chief Emmett Sweeny, Jr. passed away this morning. Emmett had a proud family history of firefighters; our grandfather Cordes Lucas was chief of Pearl River Excelsior FD, our grandmother Juletta Lucas was dispatcher for over 20 years and Emmett's dad, Emmett Sweeny, Sr. was also Chief of Excelsior. Emmett and his brother Bob were both firefighters in Excelsior until they moved from Pearl River. Emmett moved to Nanuet where he joined that FD. Around 1970, he and his family moved to FL. Always a special man, he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Graduated Nanuet High 1963. I used to work across from the fire house at Rockland Paper before it burned down. Moved to Fla. in 1969. I'm retired and now living in northwest Ga.
Used to live at 68 Prospect St. and when the whistle sounded the Volunteers would fly down the hill and Paul Demoa would roar out of his driveway in his convertible and it was a wonder nobody would run into the paper house as they stopped and ran to the trucks. Many times I used to see Ted from the corner gas station leave on a truck alone to go fight the fires. I used to enjoy the New York/New Jersey Parades when I was young because the parade route would come up Fairview Ave. and turn east on Prospect road right in front of our house. God I loved those Parades. Looking at the Personnel and seeing so many people I knew that are no longer with us is sad. All of you people deserve medals for all you do. May the Good Lord protect each of you........

Hope mom and dad are doing good. My dad, passed away 17 years ago. He had alzheimers/dementia. He suffered alot in the end but is now in a better place and joining all the other firemen up there looking down on us and having a beer and comparing stories. Hope to hear from you.

Hello again!
Thanks for getting back to me this morning Jason Schlesinger and Chief Straut! I just didn't want anyone to think that no one was replying-things just seem to have gotten lost in cyberspace:)
I am looking forward to helping update more information about other missing members and surprising my Dad soon with this. I am sure he can share lots then as well as Mom.
Family Firematically yours...
Robin

So happy to find this site! My Dad, Jerry "Whitey" Schecker was a member in the late 60's thru probably the mid-late 80's. My Mom, Joy, was in the ladies auxillary. They have moved away now but I would love to share this site with them. Neither of them are listed as members and I would love to see them added. If anyone can tell me who to contact to do this, please let me know with a message on here.

I have so many great memories of being the child of a NFD member...shuffleboard, pinball and pool in the back room with an ice cold rootbeer; Family picnics at the Knolls with the games, great food and fun just before going back to school in the fall; signal 13's with the auxillary and spaghetti dinners and the tournaments with hose pulls, bucket brigades and realizing how hard what they did really was!
Jane Fickes Storm...saw your post! Do you remember me? I babysat for you when you lived almost behind us on Grandview! And Kathy Kivelhan...I remember you and your family too!!

Reading so many names brought back memories of my childhood... the Forans, Joey Keyrouse, Freddy Braband, Pauli DeMoa, Ray and Socky Trojahn, John Fickes, Ernie Giraudin, Bob Lacey (we lived across the street from Bob and Ann!) and "Uncle Marc" Anderson just to name a few. I keep thinking of more and go check the lists to see how many more ring a bell. There are several more that I don't see (like John Ahle and wife Eileen-I know they still see my folks) Just had a flash of Freddie Parker-he was a mailman and was in the color guard with Dad...I could go on for hours! The memories are just flooding back! Please-someone tell me how to get my father listed on here! His time with Dept. 8 was so important to him. He has had some real medical challenges in the past few years and I know that this would be important to him. I would like to share this site with him and maybe let him listen to 44 Control like I have been doing-I think it would be great for him. I have emailed the "contact us" email almost 2 weeks ago and have heard nothing yet. If anyone sees this and can "light a fire" under someone to contact me, I would really appreciate it! Thanks so much for this site and for the memories!!
Robin

Hey to the Sweeney's - I sent Robert a couple of emails but never had a response. Not sure I was given the right email address.

I'm Cordes Lucas' granddaughter - your grandmother Irene's niece. My mother was her sister Marian.

The Cordes George who expressed interest on this board is my son.

I'd love to chat with you - hope you see this and respond.

I was just going through the website which bought back so many memories. My dad, John Kivlehan, was chief in the 70's. I just saw the 8-1250 was retired. I remember the day that truck arrived in Nanuet, along with many other firetrucks. If any one can tell me, which trucks had my dad's name on it and if they are also retired. He put such pride in picking out these trucks and driving them to their new home in Nanuet. Keep up the good work guys. The Nanuet Fire House was my dad's 2nd home.

Seems that there is 'something' to numerology of 'the 8s' because I used to live on 8 Birch Drive (cross street Ludvigh Rd) in 8-101s first due, retired from the Navy in the Rock Hill District (Ruby, VA) of Stafford County and joined this department in '93. Still have vivid memories of the wailing 'call' sirens, members responding from wherever/whatever they were doing, and screaming pieces of the main station in town when I was a kid in the 50-60s! NEVER imagined I'd step up to be a F/F and now can't imagine ever stepping down. And to see we have the same pumpers? KEWL!!! :-)

My name is Seamus Mills. Some of your members may remember me when we met 10 years ago when we (and you) lost our precious Edward Mills. I was taken aback by your love and devotion to Edward and his sendoff. It was something of storybooks and so graciously appreciated by all of his family and friends. We still talk about what you did for him to this day, and I'm sure the next generation in our family will be made wise to your outstanding efforts and love of Eddie.
I am reaching out to anywhere possible that may be of help to Kieran M Mills, uncle and close personal friend to Edward Mills. Kieran has recently been diagnosed with a Chordoma, a rare form of cancer at the base of the brain. Kieran is a member of the FDNY and was also active during search and rescue and clean-up operations at Ground Zero on 9-11-01. He and his family are in need of help. After diagnosis there is an average of seven years left of life. He is having a great deal of difficulty finding a specialist within his insurance network.
If there is anyone that may come to mind that would be able to help either monetarily or medically, ALL of our family would be greatly indebted to you. He is a staple of unity and a pillar of happiness to us all.
Many of you may also remember Kieran. He has spear-headed many fundraisers for fallen members and their families. Unfortunately, a time has come in which his family, Ann Marie, Kieran Jr., Mikaila and Aidan, are with there backs to a wall.
I thank you for all of your service and also for any information that anyone may be able to yield. God bless you all and be safe.

Best Regards,

Seamus Mills

I remember my Dad, Lou Heydeman (whose gun shop was on Main St until he moved to the Canary Islands in 1957).coming home from the great quilt factory fire, covered with soot and a little tipsy, a rare event, after the fire was under control.
More I remember the deli across the street from Keyrouses Drug Store that
made a shaved bologna sandwich on a hard roll, a whole fat dill pickle and bottle of cream soda for $.25. Nanuet Diner cocanut cream pie. Pizza at Joe's in Valley Cottage. Still the best I ever ate.
Dad passed a few years ago but for the few who might remember him he was still a rabble rousing, getting things done kind of guy, only more so, now he could rabble in three languages.
Would love to hear from anyone remembering our family.

Hi,
My Dad was Ernest "Ernie" Muller, longtime Treasurer of the fire co. I remember the fire house with the gong to call the firemen and when George Overmeyer wouldn't show anyone else how to run the new truck. Lots of good memories of Nanuet and the Fire Co.
