This weekend, Nanuet firefighters joined in support of the St. Baldrick's foundation by attending this year's event to shave their heads bald. This year, the team participated in honor of Patrick Chance, the Nanuet Fire Department's youngest ever honorary member.
Each year, the St. Baldrick's foundation raises money for childhood cancer by offering participants the opportunity to shave their heads bald and raise money from friends and family. With events taking place around the nation, the St. Baldrick's Foundation funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. Government itself.
While individual members of the Nanuet fire department have been attending the event for years, this was the first year that NFD members organized together as a single team. Participants were from both the Nanuet and Congers fire departments.
Once the anticipation had reached its max, the Nanuet Fire Department team was finally called to take their seats. One by one, the heads of hair, both thick and thin, were shaved away until everyone was sporting a freshly bald scalp. Members proudly displayed pictures of Patrick Chance while being shaved. Flashbulbs popped and the crowd cheered as each bald fireman stood up to be recognized after their haircuts.
All in all, this chapter of the St. Baldrick's foundation raised well over $100,000. Next year, the Nanuet Fire Department vows to return with more participants, hoping to make the event an even bigger success than this year. |
