FOURTH STRUCTURE FIRE IN TEN DAYS FOR BUSY NANUET VOLUNTEERS

By Mike Mattera
March 23, 2010

At 9:16am Tuesday morning, Nanuet FD was alerted to respond along with the South Spring Valley FD (Dept 25) to a reported structure fire at the corner of Lillian Drive and Brookview Blvd. While responding to the call, 44-Control notified South Spring Valley and Nanuet chiefs that they were receiving multiple calls on the fire.

Upon arrival, the initial crews faced a fire that was venting from windows on the rear second floor of a Cape-Cod style house. A crew from Nanuet stretched the initial 1¾" attack line from 8-1750 to the second floor where the seat of fire was. A crew from South Spring Valley stretched an additional 1¾" line to rear of the house to prevent extension the deck, which contained 8 barbeque propane tanks. Had the propane tanks been compromised, the fire would have grown exponentially bigger, possibly even threatening other homes in the area. Soon thereafter, 25-Command decided to request the Pearl River (Dept 12) and Spring Valley (Dept 17) fire departments to the scene as well.

Members from the Pearl River fire department assisted in cutting large ventilation holes in the roof. These holes help the crews on the inside by eliminating smoke and heat. The Spring Valley Fire department acted as a FAST (firefighter assist and search team) team to aid if a firefighter were to become injured or lost within the structure.

The main body of fire was extinguished within a half hour but the second floor of the single family residence needed extensive overhaul due to the large quantity of contents being stored there.

Units: 8-1, 8-3, 8-1750
